Why Prepare Homemade Food for Your Dog

EZ Homemade Dog Food for Dogs with Allergies

Today we’re going to discuss “why” you would want to to prepare homemade food for your dog. There a lots of really obvious good reasons why you’d want to make a homemade diet, but the number one reason people consider making a homemade diet for their pets is because you know exactly what is in the food.

Pet Food Quality Regulations

Surprisingly, neither the U.S.D.A. nor the F.D.A. nor the American Association of Food Control Officers controls or dictates what commercial pet food companies put in their pet foods. What that means is that you have to trust these pet food manufacturers to tell you the truth about the ingredients they use to manufacture your pet’s foods. You also have to trust that what they display on the label is actually what they put into the food.

Pet food regulation is up to each state… and individual states don’t enforce the codes equally and even then, they are pretty loosely regulated. They don’t really regulate the quality, absorption, or digestibility of the pet foods.

That is not to say that there aren’t some great, quality pet foods available… but as a whole, many have lost trust in the pet food industry industry.

“Human Grade” Ingredients Only

If the dog food brand that you’re feeding doesn’t state that it is made of ONLY “human grade” ingredients, it probably isn’t. One sign that it consists of “human grade” ingredients is that the food is about three times as expensive as the lower quality foods.

Unfortunately, when you flip over the bag and see crude protein… that can constitute a whole bunch of pieces and parts that can be less than desirable to be feeding your pet.

“Species” Appropriate Dog Food

The next consideration is whether your dog’s diet is “species” appropriate.

As you learn more about it, you’ll find that it’s imperative that you not feed your carnivores carbohydrates, including grains like corn wheat, soy,and rice. Some of the higher carb veggies can be appropriate in certain situations… for example, if you have a really lean dog that is having problems holding or maintaining their weight. You can consider adding some vegetable sources of carbohydrates… but in terms of grains, dogs don’t have a “grain” requirement so it is recommended that you not feed grains to your pets.

It is difficult, especially in many parts of the country, to find good quality “human grade” grain-free foods. These can also be very, very expensive… so that’s another reason why many people turn to feeding homemade diets. Creating your own home made dog food is cheaper than feeding a “human grade” quality canned food.

Another thing to think about is this… dogs were never designed to eat an entirely dehydrated food source. That’s what dry food is… a “kibble” or dry, crunchy food is entirely dehydrated. This causes a lot of organ stressing, including kidney and liver degeneration.

What Are the Best Qualities to Look For?

The best quality foods are biologically appropriate… excellent quality… and species appropriate. This means that it needs to be in the biologically correct form your dogs… meaning it needs to be “moisture rich”. You want the food to be a high-protein, high moisture, low carbohydrate diet… and that can be very difficult to find.

Chemicals and Preservatives

Another great thing about a homemade dog food recipes is that you can avoid chemicals, preservatives, emulsifiers, and “food coloring” that you don’t want to be feeding your pet. Many pet foods… even great quality pet foods, add flavor enhancers and extra “fats” that are quite palatable, but often times, your pets don’t need. So the advantage is by home preparing your pet’s meals, you have complete control over the ingredients that go into your pet foods.
